“LAWYER EDUCATION” WORKING GROUP CHARTER

GOAL:

  • To show the Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc. (“LANC”) video at all NCBA-sponsored CLE seminars and at 50 law firms across North Carolina.

BACKGROUND:

To a great extent, the problem of access to justice for the poor is a problem of lack of education – lack of education on the part of the lawyers who might help solve this problem if only they understood it better.

That is why, as part of the “4All” Task Force, the “Lawyer Education” Working Group is being asked to educate North Carolina lawyers about poverty issues in North Carolina, legal aid’s inability to meet the legal needs of that population, and our professional and moral obligation as lawyers to act.

The Working Group will do that by showing LANC’s “Equal Access” video at every NCBA-sponsored CLE seminar during the 2007-2008 bar year and at 50 law firms across the state during the 2007-2008 bar year.

In many ways, this single effort – discreet though it is – is the linchpin to the “4All” Task Force’s work. The degree to which lawyers will feel called to donate to the NCBF Endowment’s new LANC Fund or to participate in the “4All” Service Day will bear a direct relationship to the degree to which they understand the problems these efforts are designed to redress and the role they are called to play in redressing them.
